By the end of this page, you will know what the five most common AI website builders really cost a Hong Kong small business in 2026, which fees appear after the first year, which builder fits which kind of business, and one question most price comparisons ignore: whether AI assistants can actually read the site you are paying for.
Every builder now advertises AI. Type a few lines about your business and a full site appears in minutes. The sticker prices look similar, between US$17 and US$39 a month. The real bills are not similar at all, because of renewals, payment fees, add-on apps and plan rules that only show up later.
All prices below are list prices in US dollars, converted at HK$7.8, with the source and the date it was last checked. Builders change prices often, so treat this as a buying guide, not a contract.
How much does an AI website builder cost in Hong Kong?
For a typical small business site, expect about HK$150 to HK$310 a month on annual billing, or roughly HK$1,600 to HK$3,700 a year. Online shops cost more once payment fees are added. Promotional plans can start under HK$30 a month but usually renew at three to four times the price.
The quick price list, annual billing per month (monthly billing in brackets):
--- Wix: Free plan with Wix ads; Light US$17 (US$24); Core US$29 (US$36); Business US$39 (US$46); Business Elite US$159 (US$172). Source: CostBench, verified 25 August 2026.
--- Squarespace: no free plan, 14-day trial; Basic US$19 (US$25); Core US$29 (US$33); Plus US$49 (US$56); Advanced US$99 (US$139). Source: CostBench, verified 24 August 2026.
--- Shopify: Basic US$29 (US$39); Grow US$79 (US$105); Advanced US$299 (US$399). A 3-day free trial, then US$1 a month for the first three months. Source: CostBench, verified 26 July 2026.
--- Hostinger Website Builder: Premium from US$2.99 on a 48-month prepaid term, renewing at US$10.99; Business from US$3.99, renewing at US$16.99. Source: Website Builder Expert, 2026.
--- ChatGPT Sites: no separate fee; included in paid ChatGPT plans such as Plus at US$20 a month, with beta usage limits. Our ChatGPT Sites pricing guide covers the details.
What hidden costs come after the first year?
The first-year price is rarely the long-term price. Introductory discounts expire, free domains start charging, paid apps accumulate and payment fees grow with sales. Squarespace also raised the listed price of every plan in August 2026, by 40% to 56%, according to CostBench's price history.
The five costs that most often surprise small business owners:
--- Renewal jumps: Hostinger's Premium plan moves from US$2.99 to US$10.99 a month at renewal, and Business from US$3.99 to US$16.99. That is roughly HK$23 rising to HK$86 and HK$133 a month.
--- Price rises on existing plans: CostBench recorded Squarespace's listed Basic price rising from US$16 to US$25 a month, and Core from US$23 to US$33, in August 2026.
--- Domain renewal: most builders give the domain free for the first year only. CostBench lists Wix domain renewals at about US$15 to US$30 a year and Squarespace at US$20 to US$70 depending on the ending.
--- Paid apps: booking widgets, review tools and email marketing often cost US$10 to US$50 a month each on Wix, and Shopify stores commonly spend US$100 to US$300 a month on apps, according to CostBench.
--- Refund rules: Wix refunds annual plans only within 14 days of purchase or renewal, and does not allow mid-term downgrades.
How much do payment fees add for an online shop?
For a shop, payment fees often cost more than the plan itself. On Shopify Basic, Hong Kong card payments run at an estimated 3.3% plus HK$2.35 per order, according to Aspire's February 2026 guide. On HK$50,000 of monthly sales, that is close to HK$1,950 a month in fees, against HK$226 for the plan.
How that example adds up, assuming 125 orders averaging HK$400:
--- 3.3% of HK$50,000 is HK$1,650.
--- 125 orders at HK$2.35 is about HK$294.
--- Total fees: about HK$1,944 a month, before any add-on apps.
Shopify confirms that exact rates depend on your store location and plan, and shows them inside the store admin, so check there before you commit. Shopify also adds its own fee of 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow and 0.6% on Advanced if you use an outside payment provider instead of Shopify Payments.
Squarespace charges a 2% online store fee on Basic and 0% from Core upward. Wix charges no platform fee, but card processors still take their cut on every plan.
What does a website really cost over two years?
Pricing the first two years together gives a far more honest picture than the monthly sticker price. A simple information site costs roughly HK$1,100 to HK$3,600 over two years. A booking site costs about HK$5,400 or more, and an online shop easily passes HK$20,000 once apps and payment fees are included.
Four worked examples, using the list prices above at HK$7.8 to the US dollar:
--- Information site on Hostinger Premium: US$143.52 prepaid covers 48 months, about HK$1,120 in total. The catch is the lock-in: you pay four years upfront, and the plan then renews at US$10.99 a month.
--- Information site on Wix Light: US$204 a year, about HK$1,590. Year two adds the domain renewal of US$15 to US$30, so two years cost roughly HK$3,300 to HK$3,420.
--- Booking site on Squarespace Core: US$348 a year, about HK$2,710, or about HK$5,430 over two years. Squarespace's email marketing add-on, if you need it, costs US$5 to US$48 a month more, according to CostBench.
--- Small online shop on Shopify Basic: US$348 a year for the plan, about HK$2,710. Add even one US$20 app and the payment fees from the example above, and year one passes HK$26,000, most of it fees that rise with sales.
The lesson is simple. For a brochure site, the platform price is the main cost. For a shop, the platform price is the smallest line on the bill.
Can AI assistants read a site built on these platforms?
Usually yes, but not automatically, and the settings differ by builder. More customers now ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude for "a good clinic near Causeway Bay" instead of searching Google. If AI crawlers are blocked, or your hours and prices are hidden in images, your site may never be quoted, however good it looks.
This matters more each month. On 27 October 2026, the business newsletter AI Newsflash reported that Exa, a search engine built for AI agents, now lists over 211 million local businesses, and advised owners to keep hours, services and prices correct on their own websites because that is what these crawlers read.
What we found for each platform:
--- Squarespace: has a "Block known artificial intelligence crawlers" option, off by default, and a separate llms.txt option (a short summary file written for AI systems), also off by default, according to SEOmatic's guide.
--- Shopify: no one-click switch. AI crawler rules are set by editing a robots.txt template, which most owners will need help with.
--- Wix: we could not verify a documented AI-crawler or llms.txt setting at the time of writing.
--- ChatGPT Sites: a page can stop being public if it hits a beta usage limit, which affects every visitor, human or AI.
None of the builders tells you, in plain words, whether ChatGPT can find and correctly describe your business. That is a separate check.
Which AI website builder should a Hong Kong SME choose?
Choose by what your website must do, not by the AI feature list. A brochure site, a booking site and an online shop have very different total costs. Each of the five builders wins for at least one type of business, and none is the right answer for everyone.
Information-only site (renovation contractor, accountant, consultant). Hostinger is the cheapest if you prepay four years: about US$143.52 upfront, roughly HK$1,120. Wix Light or Squarespace Basic cost about HK$1,590 to HK$1,780 a year but are easier to edit. Wix's free plan is fine for testing, not for a business address.
Booking and services (salon, clinic, tutor). Wix Core and Squarespace Core both cost US$29 a month annually, about HK$2,710 a year. Wix includes online scheduling on Core. Squarespace wins if you want the AI crawler controls in one place.
Selling products online. Shopify wins for stock, shipping and checkout, even though fees are higher. Wix Business at US$39 a month is a simpler choice for a small catalogue.
A one-page campaign or test. ChatGPT Sites is the fastest if you already pay for ChatGPT, but do not rely on it for your main site while usage limits can switch a popular page off.
What are the limitations of this comparison?
This page uses list prices from third-party trackers and reviews, not quotes from each vendor. All five builders bill in US dollars or local currency depending on your account, and none publishes a Hong Kong dollar price list we could verify. Card fees in Hong Kong are estimates.
Other honest caveats:
--- Chinese content: we did not test how well each AI generator writes Traditional Chinese copy. Expect to rewrite AI-generated Chinese text yourself.
--- AI features vary by plan: reviewers disagree on whether Hostinger's AI writing tools need the Business plan.
--- UD does not sell any of these builders. UD's AEO Auditor, mentioned below, checks how AI assistants read and describe a site after it is built. It does not build or host websites, and it will not fix a slow or badly designed site.
--- Below a few enquiries a month, a free Google Business Profile and a simple page may be all you need.
AI website builder pricing FAQ
Is there a free AI website builder for a business?
Wix has a free plan, but it shows Wix ads and uses a Wix address instead of your own domain. It works for testing, not for a business customers need to trust.
Is monthly or annual billing better?
Annual billing saves between 8% and 29% on Wix and up to 29% on Squarespace, but Wix only refunds within 14 days. Pay monthly for the first few months if you are unsure.
Do I still need SEO if the builder uses AI?
Yes. AI writes the first draft, but you still need correct titles, clear service descriptions, real prices and accessible pages, both for Google and for AI assistants.
What should you do before you pay?
Write down what the site must do, price the second year rather than the first, add payment fees if you sell online, and check that AI assistants can read your pages after launch. Those four steps prevent most regrets, whichever builder you pick.
The AI that builds your site in five minutes is the easy part. The harder part is making sure customers, and the AI assistants they now ask, can find you and describe you correctly. Our guide to what AEO is explains how that works, and the UDomain AEO Auditor checks it for your own site.
A good website is no longer just one that looks right. It is one that both people and AI can understand. We understand AI. UD stands with you.
