Overview of Hong Kong's First Bitcoin and Ethereum Spot ETFs
On April 24, 2024, the Securities and Futures Commission of Hong Kong (SFC) approved the first virtual asset spot ETFs, which will be listed and traded on April 30, 2024. This marks a significant milestone in the development of Hong Kong's virtual asset market. The first Bitcoin and Ethereum spot ETFs will be issued by China Asset Management (Hong Kong), Boshi International, and CSOP International. A virtual asset spot ETF is an exchange-traded fund (ETF) that tracks a virtual asset index, allowing investors to easily invest in the virtual asset market without having to directly hold virtual assets.
How Virtual Asset Spot ETFs Work
Virtual asset spot ETFs track their index by directly holding virtual assets. For example, a Bitcoin spot ETF will hold Bitcoin to reflect the performance of the Bitcoin price. Investors can trade virtual assets by buying or selling units of virtual asset spot ETFs.
